2024 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup is as capable and versatile as ever, but now it’s much more luxurious and packed with more high-tech features. Considered a ritzier alternative to the Chevy Silverado 1500 largely due to the popularity of the high-end Denali line, the Sierra has struggled to be as luxurious as rivals like the upscale Ram 1500s.
With the inclusion of truly luxurious materials, especially in the top-of-the-line new Denali Ultimate, GMC’s half-ton pickup is much more enjoyable. The addition of the Super Cruise means the truck can be driven hands-free, too. Most models feature a fully digital dashboard display with a Google-based infotainment system.
As previously noted, the Sierra 1500 continues to offer a choice of powerful engines, including a 420-hp V-8 and a six-cylinder diesel with 460 pound-feet of torque. The strongest models can pull up to 13,200 pounds, and the newly added AT4X is basically GMC’s version of the off-road-focused Silverado ZR2.
GMC brought major changes to the Sierra 1500. While the exterior is enhanced by a more striking front-end design, the interior is where the upgrade is most impressive. Except for the entry-level Pro model, every Sierra has a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The revised cabin styling is further enhanced with high-end materials throughout, and the new Denali Ultimate features open-porous wood and leather surfaces. All models come standard with a variety of driver assistance, and the Super Cruise is available at Denalis.
The new AT4X represents the toughest model ever with electronic locking front and rear differentials, special suspension components, and thicker off-road tires. While the old V-6 engine was dropped, the turbo-four produces more torque and pairs with a more responsive transmission.

2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4
The off-road pickup truck segment will be one of the fastest-growing and most competitive among automakers in recent times. As off-road and Overlanding continue to grow in popularity, the three Detroit automakers rotate trucks of varying sizes, and with different levels of capability.
While General Motors may not currently have the equivalent F-150 Raptor or Ram 1500 TRX in their lineup, offerings focused on the company’s footprint should not be overlooked. The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a standout performer in its own right, while the Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss and the GMC Sierra AT4 truck represent a step up from the standard model.
Thanks to some info from our spy sources, we now know that an updated 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4 with some Denali-inspired gear might be in the works. Here’s what you need to know.
2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4 Review
The current GMC Sierra HD AT4 brings a relatively light amount of off-road hardware to the brand’s luxury pickups, compared to the Ram HD Power Wagon and Ford Super Duty Tremor.
Based on the SLT trim, the AT4 pack’s items like a 2-inch suspension lift, Rancho monotube shocks, 18 or 20-inch alloy wheels, Goodyear Wrangler tires, and underbody skid plates. A two-speed transfer box and a locking rear differential are also part of the package, which works in tandem with additional software such as Hill Descent Control and GMC’s Traction Select System.
Visually, the truck is identifiable by its unique grille treatment, dual exhausts, red tow hooks, and dark chrome accents. This formula will likely remain unchanged for the 2024 model year refresh for GM’s HD trucks.
That being said, GM has tested the new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4 with a set of chrome wheels that are usually reserved for Denali models. MC&T sources have indicated that GMC doesn’t intend to unify the Denali and AT4 trims anytime soon, so it’s possible that these Denali wheels could be offered on the new Sierra HD AT4 as an RPO factory option or an LPO dealer-installed accessory.
Giving the GMC Sierra HD AT4 2024 a bit of Denali content is likely something GMC customers will probably appreciate, as Denali trims make up a huge part of the brand’s sales. While the idea of a classier-looking AT4 model is appealing, we still hope the automaker will go ahead and bring out the off-roader to battle the segment leaders.
General Motors is more than capable of building such an engine, as the Colorado ZR2 and Hummer EV attest to. That said, we’ll just have to wait and see what comes next.
2024 GMC Sierra EV
GMC’s Hummer EV is just the beginning of the brand’s electric pickup truck journey, as we now know that there will be a second model following the Hummer in the near future. Likely similar to the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV the unnamed GMC pickup could adopt the existing Sierra nameplate or perhaps introduce a new moniker altogether.
For now, we’re assuming that it will simply be called the Sierra EV. It will be a full-size pickup to compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning and will likely be cheaper and more work-focused than the expensive, off-road-capable Hummer.
The GMC EV truck will be brand new and will use General Motors’ latest electric vehicle components. It is likely to be distinguished from the Chevy Silverado in terms of styling inside and out.
2024 GMC Sierra Engine, Transmission and Performance
GM’s Ultium battery packs will supply power to the pickup’s electric motors in a variety of configurations. A single-motor rear-wheel drive arrangement will likely become standard, with optional all-wheel drive in the form of a two-motor setup with one motor in front and one motor in the rear. GMC trucks may offer a more powerful three-motor setup like the Hummer at higher trim levels.
2024 GMC Sierra Range, Charge and Battery Life
There’s no word yet on the different Ultium battery capacity levels, but we think GMC will offer a variety of battery sizes. The smaller battery will provide less driving distance but should still offer more than 200 miles on a charge.
The top battery pack, which can go up to 200.0 kWh, may be close to an estimated 400 mile range, but we’ll have to wait for the EPA ratings to know for sure. Fast charging capabilities will likely be available.

Inside, the Sierra is designed with the driver in mind. Controls are easy to reach and material quality generally improves with trim levels. Starting with the SLE, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel comes standard. Spending big bucks on top trim unlocks more desirable features, including a head-up display and power-adjustable steering column.
Denali Ultimate is the place where things get really luxurious thanks to the open-porous wood trim and the plush leather finish. The front seats also feature 16-way power adjustment as well as a massage function. The interior cubby storage is more than enough to store all sorts of small items and items.
While GMC doesn’t offer particularly innovative storage features, the Sierra 1500 can be had with a tailgate trick that has many configurations. There’s also an exclusive carbon fiber reinforced cargo bed that’s lighter and reputedly stronger than steel.

2024 GMC Sierra MPG: Real-World Fuel Economy
The Sierra 1500 has several different powertrain combinations, meaning its fuel economy ratings vary. Those most concerned with fuel efficiency should opt for the optional diesel engine, which has speeds of up to 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
However, most Sierras will pack the 6.2-liter V-8 that comes standard on every Denali model. It is estimated to produce 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway when paired with all-wheel drive.
