2024 GMC Denali is GMC’s acclaimed pickup model that can tow enormous payloads, but their Herculean efforts don’t end there. This high-powered workhorse is pretty neat too, with chrome exterior components and a leather interior saddle.
The Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD are jumbo-sized versions of the Sierra 1500, which are reviewed separately. This GMC pickup delivers a higher level of refinement and craftsmanship than the Chevrolet Silverado HD range.
Also equipped with the 2024 GMC Denali’s base powertrain is a 401-hp 6.6-liter V-8 with 10-speed automatic transmission, while a 470-hp Duramax turbodiesel V-8 with 10-speed automatic transmission is required for the Sierra HD’s maximum conventional towing capacity. 22,500 pounds.
Additional trailer assist features are also coming to the 2024 GMC Denali: including Transparent Trailer View, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and adaptive cruise control available with trailering, enabling Sierra HD to work smarter, not harder. While the heavy-duty Sierra lacks the smoothness and maximum towing capacity of competitors like the Ram HD and Ford Super Duty, it’s a reliable choice for those with a truck-sized hole in their heart.
2024 GMC Denali Earlier in the day when Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2020 Silverado HD, the reception was understandably divided, mainly due to the truck’s divisive exterior design and unimpressive interior. GMC’s Sierra HD 2020 has a much more attractive exterior, but the same boring interior and technology package as its predecessor.
Four years later, Chevrolet introduced its updated 2024 Silverado HD lineup with much fanfare last month. The Silverado HD is ultimately what we all hoped for, with a proper new exterior design and an amazing new interior similar to the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
This leaves only the Sierra with problems. While the prospect of a new interior and advanced technology excited us, we were a bit apprehensive about the Sierra HD’s already elegant exterior design.
GMC has officially launched Sierra HD 2024, and we’re happy to report that any concerns we had were promptly resolved. Similar to the protagonist of every new season of The Bachelor, the new Sierra HD is more sculpted, sculpted, and attractive than its predecessor. Let’s dive in!
2024 GMC Denali Review
As far as we know the 2024 GMC Denali has mostly taken place in the exterior upgrades for the 2024 Sierra HD pickup centered on the grille, front bumper, and fascia, with each trim level receiving a unique front-end treatment.
Additionally, the functional hood scoop on Duramax diesel models adds a crossbar element that is unique to the 2024 GMC Denali and Denali Ultimate grades. The rear of the Sierra HD is adorned with upgraded taillights, although the front gets most of the exterior attention.
New lighting on the 2024 GMC Denali enables new animated lighting sequences when approaching, starting, and using turn signals. The SLE, AT4, and 2024 GMC Denali models receive new wheel options, including 22-inch wheels as an option.

Although the heavy-duty Sierra lacks the refinement and maximum towing capacity of competitors such as the Ram HD and Ford Super Duty, it is a reliable option for those with a truck-sized hole in their hearts.
The heaviest-duty pickup from GMC receives a light visual refreshment alongside larger changes including a revised powertrain with increased towing capacity and an all-new specification. The Sierra HD’s front fascia has been updated, and LED headlamps and taillights with sequential turn signals are now optional. The output and torque of the 6.6-liter Duramax turbocharged diesel V-8 have increased to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet, respectively.
Across the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD lineup, the increased power has increased the towing capacity to a maximum of 22,500 pounds at the hitch. The 401-hp 6.6-liter V-8 gasoline engine’s six-speed automatic transmission has been substituted with the Allison-certified 10-speed automatic transmission, which was previously exclusive to the diesel engine.
A brand-new 2024 GMC Denali Ultimate trim has been added to the 2500HD and 3500HD, providing an even higher level of opulence than the popular 2024 GMC Denali trim.
The 2024 GMC Denali Ultimate adds leather-wrapped door panels, a steering wheel, and A- and B-pillar handles, just as the Sierra 1500 does. Intricate leather embroidery with a topographic map of Alaska’s Mount 2024 GMC Denali adorns the 16-way power-adjustable, heated, and cooled messaging front seats. GM’s Transparent Trailer View is now compatible with both gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailering.
Standard driver assistance technology on the Sierra HD has also been enhanced for 2024. In addition to the AT4X off-road package, there is also an AEV Edition with steel bumpers, 18-inch AEV rims, and stronger skid plates.

2024 GMC Denali Update
For the 2024 model year, the GMC Sierra HD lineup, which includes the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD, will undergo a significant redesign. Updates announced earlier this month include a new front fascia, new tail lamps, a redesigned interior, and significant powertrain and capability enhancements. In the following GM Authority spotlight, we take a closer look at the 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali.
The 2024 GMC Sierra HD is available in Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim levels. In addition, the off-road Sierra HD AT4X trim will be available later in the model year. The 2024 GMC Denali specification level is positioned at the pinnacle, just below the new-for-2024 Denali Ultimate, and provides customers with the ability to tow or haul with maximum comfort.
The World’s First Sierra HD Denali Ultimate
The GMC Sierra HD has been a reliable companion for drivers who require the power and capability of a heavy-duty vehicle. Now, 2024 GMC Denali is setting the standard for heavy-duty trucks with the introduction of the new 2024 Sierra Heavy Duty and the first-ever Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, which feature enhanced power under the hood, a long list of improved trailering technologies, and a refined interior that provides comfort and in-vehicle comfort.
The 2024 Sierra HD lineup consists of 2500 and 3500 HD models in Regular, Double, and Crew Cab body styles, with dual-rear-wheel variants available for 3500 HD models. Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate are the available trims, with AT4X arriving later in the model year.
The 2024 GMC Denali Ultimate commands street respect with its iconic Denali design and new signature exterior details, from the grille to the tailgate. The exterior features a redesigned 2024 GMC Denali signature grille finished with Vader chrome, Vader chrome GMC badging, unique 2024 GMC Denali Ultimate fender badging, new LED projector headlamps and signature animated lighting sequences, power-retractable assist steps with LED perimeter lighting, and high-end 20″ ultra-bright machined aluminum wheels with high gloss back accents.
The 2024 Sierra HD Denali Ultimate interior reaches new heights and provides ultimate comfort in a heavy-duty truck. It features the exclusive Alpine Umber interior with supreme finishes including soft, yet durable full-grain leather with plaited stitching, wrapping the best-in-class 16-way power front massaging seats, door panels, and center console lid.
A topographical map of Mt. Denali is laser-etched and embossed throughout the interior, paying homage to the inspiration for the truck’s name.
More Power and More Refinement For Duramax Turbo Diesel Available
If there is one thing for which 2024 GMC Denali Sierra heavy-duty vehicles are known, it is their engine power and towing capacity.
GMC is enhancing the already capable 6.6L V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel by pairing it with a 10-speed Allison transmission delivering 470 hp (at 2800 rpm) and 975 lb-ft (at 1600 rpm) of torque, providing more power throughout the entire operating speed range. Specifically, low-end torque production increases by up to 25 percent compared to the current model, resulting in improved towing performance.
The 2024 Sierra HD will also offer a best-in-class maximum towing capacity of 22,070 pounds for the 2500 crew cab and 36,000 pounds for the 3500 HD regular crew cab when adequately equipped with the available Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8.
This latest incarnation of the Duramax engines incorporates several enhancements intended to increase combustion efficiency and overall performance.

In addition to the improvements made to the optional 6.6L V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel, GMC has mated the 10-speed Allison Automatic transmission to the standard 6.6L V8 gas engine, replacing the previous six-speed automatic with smaller “steps” between the gears. This allows the 6.6L V8 gas engine to be held closer to its peak power (401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque) for longer periods.
This translates to a more confident sense of on-demand power, regardless of whether the truck is towing a trailer or not, thanks in part to the 10-speed configuration and the ability to channel each pound-foot of torque to the tires in every gear.
2024 GMC Denali Interior, Cargo, and Comfort
Inside, the 2024 GMC Denali Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD have a huge dashboard that hosts user-friendly switchgear. Most models have a split-folding front bench that can be replaced with a pair of bucket seats and a full center console. The Sierra’s interior can also be optioned with a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, heated-and-cooled front seats, and wireless charging.
Unfortunately, the cabin’s panel fits and material quality are mediocre at best. While there’s an abundance of soft-touch surfaces throughout, and most models benefit from durable plastics, the top-of-the-line 2024 GMC Denali falls woefully short of its luxury billing. The new 2024 GMC Denali Ultimate trim is as grandeur as it gets, with leather-wrapped interior pieces, Paldao wood trim pieces, and a soft microsuede headliner.
The fanciest alternatives from Ram overshadow the GMC largely thanks to their significantly more upscale look and feel. Still, the Sierra HD will please pickup truck buyers who prioritize practicality and versatility. Along with extensive passenger space in the crew cab, the 2024 GMC Denali is littered with handy interior cubby storage. Its standard and long cargo boxes have built-in steps on both sides of the bed and the rear bumper has them at each corner.
The box can be further customized with LED lighting, movable tie-downs, and a 120-volt outlet. The heavy-duty Sierra’s biggest showpiece is its innovative multi-function tailgate, which has six different positions that include a work surface and bench. It’s a tailgater’s dream come true.
The Sierra HD Denali’s interior features a redesigned cockpit with a brand-new 13.4-inch diagonal center interface and a 12.4-inch diagonal digital driver information center. A 15-inch Head-Up Display (HUD) with multiple colors is available.
In addition, the Sierra HD Denali’s interior includes a premium instrument panel, a 2024 GMC Denali-exclusive authentic open-pore walnut wood accent, perforated leather seats with contrasting stitching, and an embroidered 2024 GMC Denali insignia on the front seat-backs.
Technology
GMC’s available ProGrade Trailering System extends the 2024 GMC Sierra HD’s array of advanced technology beyond the realms of entertainment and safety to encompass towing. 14 distinct camera views serve as the system’s foundation, including hitch guidance with Hitch View, bed view with magnification, bed hitch guidance for fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers, and rear side view with trailer length indicator. Also new is GCW Alert, which utilizes acceleration data to warn the driver if the vehicle’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) is exceeded by the truck and trailer. GMC’s remarkable Transparent Trailer camera function is now compatible with the gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers and is now available for the 2024 Sierra HD. Transparent Trailer uses a camera on the back of the vehicle and an accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer to create a view of the area behind the truck as if the trailer were not there, enabling the driver to virtually “see through” the trailer.
All 2024 GMC Sierra HD models, including the Sierra HD Denali, will come standard with the GMC Pro Safety suite of driver assistance technologies.

The Sierra HD’s interior design and technology suite lagged behind the truck’s exterior styling and powertrain performance until now. In 2024, everything will transform. GMC designers have created new and distinctive interiors for the SLE and SLT variants, as well as premium interiors for the AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. The interior of the base Pro series Sierra HD remains unchanged since the 2023 model year.
The Sierra HD’s upgraded cabin is highlighted by a new 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen, the largest in its class. This screen runs Google Built-In and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Also available are a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch head-up display with complete color. This provides the Sierra HD a combined screen size of more than 40 inches.
GMC has added adaptive cruise control to the Sierra HD for 2024, and it is compatible with a trailer. Rear cross-traffic brakes and trailer side blind zone alert are optional through the Pro Safety Plus package.

Towing Assistance
The 2024 GMC Sierra HD’s suite of advanced technology doesn’t stop at just entertainment and safety—it also extends into the realm of towing, through GMC’s available ProGrade Trailering System. Anchoring the system is a massive 14 different camera views, which include hitch guidance with Hitch View, bed view with Zoom, bed hitch guidance for fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers, and rear side view with trailer length indicator.
Also new is GCW Alert, which uses acceleration data to warn the driver if the truck and trailer exceed the vehicle’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR). Finally, an enhanced version of GMC’s impressive Transparent Trailer camera function is available for the 2024 Sierra HD and is now compatible with the gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.

Denali Reaches the Summit
Following the Sierra 2022 and Yukon 2023, GMC will add the Denali Ultimate trim to the Sierra HD 2024. Consider the Denali Ultimate as having checked all the proverbial boxes, with the only significant option being exterior color. The Sierra Denali HD Ultimate will be the most exclusive, opulent, and technologically sophisticated Sierra HD model to date. The truck is equipped with a distinctive grille and exterior emblems finished in dark Vader chrome. In the rear, a MultiPro tailgate with a Kicker audio system and hydraulic side steps are standard.
The exclusive Alpine Umber interior of the Denali Ultimate features full-grain leather accents not only on the seats but also on the door panels, center compartment lid, and A- and B-pillar grab handles. On the instrument panel is genuine open-pore Paldao wood trim and authentic aluminum accents. A Bose 12-speaker premium audio system with Centerpoint surround technology is protected by engraved stainless steel speaker grilles.
In addition to the A- and B-pillar trim, the headline and visors are crafted from premium micro suede. Standard features include a rear-view camera mirror, a 15-inch head-up display, and a power sunroof. We have had the opportunity to spend some time in the new 2024 Sierra Denali HD Ultimate, and we must say that we are impressed.
Rugged AT4X Will Arrive
When Chevrolet hinted that a ZR2 HD model would be released in late 2023, we suspected that a Sierra HD AT4X would soon follow. We are delighted to report that we were correct, as GMC has withdrawn a similarly ambiguous one-line statement indicating that the 2024 Sierra HD AT4X will be released in late 2023. The Sierra HD AT4X will have large shoes to fill following the impressive Sierra AT4X and Canyon AT4X, so we hope GMC is up to the task.
2024 GMC Denali Exterior
The exterior of the Sierra HD Denali features new LED projector headlamps and signature illumination, a bold new front bumper, fascia, and chrome Denali grille, chrome vertical recovery hooks at the front, and a spray-on bedliner with the Denali logo in the bed. 20-inch Ultra-Bright Machined Wheels with Bright Chrome and Gloss-Black Accents (single rear wheel) or 18-inch Forged Polished Aluminum Wheels (dual rear wheel / dually models) are standard on the vehicle. 22-inch Aluminum Wheels are only available as an option on models with a single rear tire.

2024 GMC Denali Engine and Powertrain
Standard on the Sierra HD is a gas-powered 6.6-liter V-8 that produces 401 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It is equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The optional Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 generates 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque via an Allison-certified 10-speed automatic transmission.
For 3500 HD models, you can also specify a single or dual-wheel rear axle (known as a “dually”). We have only driven an earlier diesel version, but the gas-powered engine in the otherwise identical Chevy Silverado 2500HD impressed us with its dependability.
However, there’s no denying that the Duramax is a standout feature of the Sierra large-Duty, and it’s a no-brainer for those who frequently tow large loads. The transmission is very responsive and the engine is surprisingly refined. Together, they helped the tested 2500HD Denali achieve astonishingly rapid acceleration.
The enormous GMC has an acceptable ride quality for its class. Despite its vague steering at highway velocities, the Sierra feels more agile than heavy-duty competitors. The trail-ready AT4 and AT4X models feature off-road suspension and a locking rear differential to complement their otherwise all-black appearance.
Enhanced 6.6-Liter Duramax Diesel Engine; Allison Gas Engine
The 2024 GMC Sierra HD’s 6.6-liter Duramax diesel has 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, which is an increase of 25 hp and 65 lb-ft. To facilitate this increase, the L5P Duramax engine received an all-new and more efficient turbocharger, new cylinder heads with improved cooling capability, new pistons with redesigned bowls, new fuel injectors, increased injection pressure, and an improved fuel pump.
In 2020, the 10-speed Allison transmission made its debut with the Duramax diesel engine. In 2024, it will also be mated to GMC’s 6.6-liter gasoline V-8. The Allison’s smaller “steps” between gear ratios will allow the gasser to stay closer to its peak power (401 hp and 464 lb-ft) for longer.
Performance
The 2024 GMC Sierra HD lineup will continue to feature the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine as standard equipment. The atmospheric V8 continues to be rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, but now features a ten-speed automatic transmission branded by Allison in lieu of the six-speed transmission found on models prior to the refresh.
The optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine produces 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, up from 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque before the revision. The large diesel engine continues to be coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission manufactured by Allison.

2024 GMC Denali Platforms
The 2024 Sierra Light Duty model will continue to use the GM T1 platform that is most widely used with the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500. The same basic architecture is also used on the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2021 Chevrolet Suburban, 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

2024 GMC Denali Ultimate
Following the 2022 Sierra and 2023 Yukon, GMC is adding a top-spec Denali Ultimate trim to the 2024 Sierra HD. Think of the Denali Ultimate as checking all of the proverbial boxes, with the only major option to choose from is the exterior color.
The Sierra Denali HD Ultimate will be the most premium, luxurious, and technologically advanced Sierra HD to date. The truck comes fitted with a unique grille and exterior badging that come in dark Vader chrome.
Around the back, a MultiPro tailgate with a Kicker audio system is standard, as are power side steps. Inside, the 2024 GMC Denali Ultimate’s exclusive Alpine Umber interior comes with full-grain leather appointments on not only the seats but also the door panels, and center console lid, and is wrapped on the A- and B-pillar grab handles.
Genuine open-pore Paldao wood trim is found on the instrument panel, along with real aluminum accents.
Speaker grilles are etched stainless steel and cover a Bose 12-speaker premium audio system with Centerpoint surround technology. Headline and visors are premium microsuede, along with the A- and B-pillar trim.
A rear-camera mirror, 15-inch head-up display, and power sunroof are also standard. We’ve gotten to spend a bit of time sitting in the new 2024 Sierra Denali HD Ultimate and we must say that we are impressed.
Rugged AT4X Will Arrive
When Chevy teased that a ZR2 HD model would arrive late in 2023, we suspected that a Sierra HD AT4X wouldn’t be far behind. We’re pleased to report that we weren’t mistaken, as GMC has now confirmed that the 2024 Sierra HD AT4X will arrive late in 2023.
2024 GMC Denali Payload and Towing Capacity
The most powerful Sierra 3500HD is capable of towing up to 36,000 pounds with a diesel engine, regular cab, rear-wheel drive, dual-rear-wheel axle, and a gooseneck hitch. The same truck with a fifth-wheel hitch reduces the towing capacity to 32,000 pounds.
The Sierra 2500HD is only available with a single-rear-wheel axle, and its strongest model can pull up to 22,500 pounds.
More Towing Where It Really Matters
Unsurprisingly, 34-ton models outsell 1-ton models by a ratio of 75/25, according to rumors.
2024 GMC Denali MPG and Energy Efficiency
Due to the fact that the EPA does not test vehicles as hefty as the Sierra HD and its enormous competitors, we can only evaluate their real-world mpg on our highway fuel-efficiency route. We’ve only driven a Sierra 2500HD Denali with a diesel engine, which achieved 17 mpg on the motorway.
Comparatively, the Silverado 2500 LTZ crew cab and Ram 2500 Tradesmen regular cab diesels that we tested both achieved 19 mpg. Those who elect for the GMC’s standard gas-powered V-8 should anticipate even worse fuel economy than with the diesel alternative.
2024 GMC Denali Features for Safety and Driver-Assistance
