Unfortunately, the “baby” Duramax 2.8L diesel engine will no longer be available in this new generation GMC Canyon. It is not confirmed why the Duramax will not be offered but some speculate that it is due to the closure of the factory in Rayong, Thailand where this machine is manufactured.
It also makes sense that it would be discontinued if indeed the 2.7L engine would be the sole power plant. The new engine has almost the same torque but is more fuel efficient than the 3.6L V6.
Of course the new GMC Canyon will undergo interior and exterior styling revisions with many of the latest infotainment & comfort features found in other GM trucks.
Pictured here is an off-road version of the new Canyon; AT4. However, unlike the current version of the Canyon AT4, the new AT4 is likely to be closer in performance to the current Colorado ZR2. From the spy photos, the New Canyon AT4 looks to have very prominent fender flares along with the more aggressive Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.
We can also see that this 2023 GMC Canyon prototype has no side steps and no chin spoiler to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency which leads us to believe that it is indeed a more aggressive version of the AT4.
2023 GMC Canyon Reviews
The 2023 GMC Canyon appears to be on the cusp of significant changes to help it compete with midsize pickup truck rivals such as the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Frontier.
This should include a greatly revamped cab with a wider range of technological features, additional standard and optional safety equipment, not to mention the possibility of a partially or 2023 GMC Canyon Hybrid fully-electric version at some point as well.
While the outgoing GMC Canyon is comfortable to drive and provides excellent towing capability, there’s no hiding the fact that this truck (and its twin, the Chevrolet Colorado) first arrived in 2015.
Details are scarce at the time of this writing, but it’s fair to assume the overall dimensions of the 2023 Canyon will approach the 2022 model.
This means both Extended and Crew Cab variants will be offered, with the latter being the more rear legroom-friendly option for any truck buyer who plans to routinely carry more than one front passenger.
Features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi hotspot, and plenty of USB ports will keep tech-savvy truck shoppers happy.
Much more active safety features – such as automatic emergency braking, rear-traffic warning, and blind-spot monitoring – should work well in the 2023 Canyon, either as standard or optional equipment.
As for what the 2023 Canyon will offer under the hood, we’re speculating the GMC will have a turbocharged 4 cylinder as the entry-level engine, with an optional V6 for those who need extra power for towing and hauling (or who just like to be the first to go when the lights go on). cross turns green).

2023 GMC Canyon Renderings

These photos capture a prototype GMC Canyon parked somewhere in the Colorado mountains. This is actually the first time we’ve seen a version of the next-gen Chevy or GMC’s midsizer in public, and as you can clearly see, GM doesn’t want people to look closely.
In addition to the heavy camouflage covering the entire truck, the cover was hastily pulled out and covered the test vehicle as our spy photographer moved in for a close-up.
The cover hides the outline of the body, but it’s clear that the medium sized formula won’t change too much. The details of the grille are obscured, but the proportions show that it wears a wider face than the GMC Canyon.
Furthermore, the chunky fenders and modest suspension height show off this AT4 model. The photographer takes a close look at the tires, showing a set of 265/65 Goodyear Wrangler with 18-inch wheels. The tires aren’t as aggressive as those on the current AT4, but that’s likely to change before production begins.
2023 GMC Canyon Interior
We haven’t heard much about interior design, and these photos don’t give us a precise picture of the interior. If the recently launched Chevrolet Silverado is any indication, look to Colorado and Canyon for a bigger infotainment screen packed into a less bulky, old-fashioned greenhouse.
It won’t follow the minimalistic approach seen in some vehicles, so there should still be plenty of buttons and knobs to control the various features. As for technology, the Super Cruise probably won’t make it to mid-size fleets, but we’ve learned to never say never.
For power, GM is likely to follow in the footsteps of the Ford Ranger by offering only one four-cylinder engine option. The prime candidate is GM’s turbocharged 2.7-liter engine pumping out 310 horsepower (231 kilowatts), which will comfortably outpace the Blue Oval’s competition with several ponies.
The next-generation Canyon and Colorado are expected for model year 2023. That means debuts sometime early to mid-2022 are likely, barring COVID or microchip-related delays.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali

Much to love about the Chevrolet Colorado—a two-time winner of MotorTrend Truck of the Year—applies to the GMC Canyon, too. Comfortable, capable and fun to drive, the Canyon is one of our favorite midsize trucks. How can GMC make the next one better?
Most of our criticisms focused on the interior, which isn’t quite as luxurious as it should be for a GMC product that is considered premium.
That’s especially true for the Denali version. Given the focus GMC has placed on making the updated cabin on the larger Sierra 1500 a nicer place, we hope that the same attention will be paid to the next Canyon.
While the current performance of the Canyon’s powertrain is good, the transmission refinement will go a long way. Even so, we found Canyon’s towing and hauling capabilities to be solid.
Honestly, pretty much everything about the Canyon has been solid—unless GMC pulls back, the next-generation model will make a great midsize truck.
GMC is working on creating a lineup of electric vehicles. That mission was started by the insane Hummer EV, and we think it’s possible that an all-electric powertrain will be offered in the future Canyon.
Chevrolet’s corporate partners have committed to the Silverado EV, so it’s likely that technology and manufacturing resources will be shared with GMC. That could manifest in the electric Canyon at some point in the run model.
Drivers haven’t shy away from opting for a taller version of the GMC pickup truck, so it seems almost certain that the next Canyon will be offered in some of the upgraded trims as it is now. The Canyon Denali might feature fancy details like better seat upholstery, premium wood grain trim, and lots of exterior chrome.
A potential AT4 model will likely take a different approach, aiming for off-road readiness with bigger tires, improved suspension, and locking differences. Denali and AT4 trims are popular choices on whatever GMC vehicle they use, increasing the likelihood that they will be available in future Canyons.
2023 GMC Canyon AT4X
General Motors is cooking up a new-generation GMC Canyon for the 2023 model year, and now, we’ve seen the GMC Canyon 2023 AT4 prototype come out and about to do some real-world testing around metro Detroit.
The last time we saw the GMC Canyon AT4 2023 was back in September, at which time our spies caught a prototype model doing high-altitude testing in Colorado. Prior to that, we took a look at testing the new Canyon AT4 last June.
Further ground clearance will be possible with a unique front fascia designed for aggressive approach angles. This particular prototype model appears to be equipped with placeholder lighting, or at least a placeholder unit for the main lighting element.
However, the production model will be equipped with new LED lighting elements and vertically oriented lighting signs.
In the corners, we see the same six-spoke wheels and black finish as the prototype model that was shown in September. The roller wrap is a set of Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires, while more aggressive tires will also be offered. In the cabin, expect a completely overhauled interior space.
As for the stuff under the skin, the 2023 GMC Canyon will ride on top of the GM 31XX -2 platform, which is an updated version of the GMT-31XX mid-size body-on-frame architecture.
The greasy bit will feature a turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B petrol engine, the same powerplant equipped by the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500. Output is rated at 310 horsepower and an improved 420 pound-feet of torque, with the 10-speed automatic making up for the cog swap.
Meanwhile, the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGZ petrol engine naturally aspirated 2.5L I4 LCV petrol engine, and 2.8L I4 LWN Duramax turbodiesel will no longer be offered for the 2023 model year.
Looking ahead, the next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 will join forces for the first time with the even more capable Canyon AT4X model, which will arrive as the GMC equivalent of the Chevy Colorado ZR2.

We expect the GMC Canyon 2023 to offer only one engine option – the GM 2.7L L3B turbo-charged four-cylinder engine with TriPower technology. In the Sierra 1500, the engine produces 310 horsepower (231 kW) @ 5600 RPM and 348 pound-feet (471 Nm) @ 1500 rpm of torque. A 10-speed programmed transmission will be the main power choice.

2023 GMC Canyon Price
We expect the 2023 GMC Canyon in base trim and rear-wheel drive configurations to start at around $28,000. It could go a bit higher, given that GMC will likely make more safety and tech touches on standard equipment on its next-generation midsize pickup truck.
The 2023 Canyon will likely continue to offer a choice of two cabin sizes and a cargo bed, with optional 4-wheel-drive (4WD) in all trims.
Top-range models like the all-terrain-oriented AT4 or the luxury-themed Denali should start at around $40,000 and $43,000, respectively. We’ll have more precise pricing information in the days to come, so stay tuned and check back often.
2023 GMC Canyon Release Date
In late 2019, General Motors announced a $1 billion investment into its assembly plant in Wentzville, Missouri, the facility where every GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado is made. The money was earmarked specifically to bring GM’s next-generation midsize pickup to market. Given the announcement, Canyon’s age, and General Motors’ typical product life cycle, the 2023 model year seems like a reasonable time frame for the new Canyon to go on sale. The chip shortage is affecting production across the industry, but General Motors looks set to get back on track.
The 2023 GMC Canyon will continue to be assembled at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri by GM USA. It will be the only factory in the world to produce the model.
We expect GMC Canyon 2023 to launch in the second half of calendar year 2022. Debuts in the first half of calendar year 2022 are likely.
